We provide the first point of contact for Veterans needing to connect to nonprofit, employment, educational, and VA resources, in order to provide paths towards self-sufficiency.
We create so much more than crafts. The veterans we serve become part of the Help Heal Veterans community of staff, volunteers and supporters; they’re appreciated and valued, and they make connections that can turn into lifelong friendships. Nowhere is this stronger than in our Community-Based Arts and Crafts Centers (CBCs).
The AWA is dedicated to honoring, aiding and supporting the Military, Veterans and First Responders who uphold the principles of our country and have chosen to unselfishly serve others and effect positive change in society. We recognize that the American Fighting Spirit is a cornerstone in the cultural foundation of our Nation, and that it continues to be a force for good.
We offer confidential help for Veterans, service members, and their families at no cost in a non-medical setting. Our services include counseling for needs such as depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the psychological effects of military sexual trauma (MST). With the excessive heat that is projected for the next few weeks, we cannot ignore the significant weather-related challenges being placed on many individuals in our community. The following resources are available in in Dallas county to help you cope with these challenging conditions. City of Dallas (Cooling Stations/Free Cooling Fans) The city of Dallas has a number of cooling stations available around the city.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) DART has opened up over a dozen transit centers into cooling locations. Salvation Army The North Texas Area Command of the Salvation Army has activated its heat relief services in locations across the region. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) recently announced that the state broke the June peak demand record, passing last summer’s record which set 11 new peak demand records. As a result, ERCOT is also asking customers to voluntarily reduce their usage and prevent electric outages by unplugging or turning off any non-critical equipment, closing shades and blinds, and reducing lighting where possible and safe. SW is a boutique suiting service providing upscale professional attire, wardrobe consulting, and education to transitioning service members, veterans, and their spouses on the path to a new career. Our SuitUp^ Program provides a pop-up suiting service to veteran events reaching those who are preparing to graduate, job fairs, interviews, networking events, daily career wear and formal attire. During SuitUP^ events, a SW Volunteer Stylists provide professional attire and assistance for each veterans individual fit and style preference. SW holds its own SuitUP^ event days or collaborates with various employment, career, and educational organizations to connect our service with the transitioning veteran population. Such organizations are VSOs, ESGR, National Guard, Colleges, and Universities, private technology schools; connecting Veterans and their families with this additional tool to help for a successful transition.
